Midday Meal Workers to Hold Actions, July 3

THE Midday Meal Workers Union (CITU) organised on June 4 a state level convention of midday meal workers in Desh Bhagat Yadgar Hall of Jalandhar (Punjab). Over 800 midday meal workers from every corner of the state participated in the convention that turned to be a big success. Harpal Kaur (Barnala), Charanjeet Kaur (Boparai) and Jasmel Kaur (Sangrur) jointly chaired the convention.

CPI(M) Demands Strict Action on Drug Trade Revelations

EXPRESSING deep concern over the shocking revelations, made by a former DG of Police, the Punjab state unit of the CPI(M) has demanded a thorough judicial probe by a sitting judge of the Supreme Court into all aspects of the drug trade in the state and nearby areas. This, the CPI(M) said, is an urgent necessity as the drug menace is adversely and severely affecting the life of a large number of students and youth not only of Punjab but also of Haryana and Rajasthan.

PUNJAB: CPI(M) Organises Satyagraha, Jail Bharo Agitation

ON February 28, the Ludhiana district committee of the CPI(M) organised a Satyagraha and Jail Bharo agitation in Ludhiana city on its 15 point charter of demands. The action took place in response to the call of the CPI(M) Central Committee. Before the agitators courted arrest, they organised a big rally at Chattar Singh Park. More than 1,000 satyagrahis then marched towards the deputy commissioner’s office. They offered themselves for arrest but it was the police that retreated.

CPI(M) Highlights Ghadar Legacy

THE entire history of our movement for freedom from British imperialism bears a very deep imprint of the Ghadar movement which was launched by those who had gone abroad for earning their livelihood but soon formed an organisation for the liberation of their motherland on the lines of the Great Uprising of 1857. This was what CPI(M) Polit Bureau member Sitaram Yechury stated while addressing a public meeting to commemorate the centenary of the Ghadar movement and to pay homage to the memory of the martyrs and others who suffered and made numerous sacrifices.

CITU Union Stages Five-Day Dharna in Ludhiana

FROM January 20 to 24, the Lal Jhanda Punjab Bhatha Mazdoor Union staged a five-day dharna in front of the district commissioner’s office at Ludhiana. The action received support not only from the CITU but from many other unions, like those of the MGNREGA workers, mid-day meal workers, Reta workers, Bharat Nirman workers and others, who took part in this protest programme of the brick kiln workers.

ASHA Workers Organise Rally in Bathinda

AT the call of Punjab CITU, a militant rally and meeting was organised in Bathinda on January 20. Despite biting cold, about 1000 ASHA workers and facilitators took part in this rally which was held near Civil Hospital, Bathinda. Several ASHA workers had their little babies with them. The district administration imposed Section 144 and did not allow the holding of rally and procession. But the police had to make a retreat when the CITU leadership told the police that they would defy prohibitory orders and would court arrest.

CITU Runs Campaign, MAY 30 to June 15

AS a follow-up of the call given by its all-India conference at Kannur (Kerala) from April 4 to 8, the May 26 meeting of the state CITU office bearers decided to launch a mass campaign and agitation on the demands which were highlighted during the February 20-21 strike by all the central trade unions and on the burning demands of various sections of the workers in Punjab.

In consequence, actions were organised during the period from May 30 to June 15.
