DURING the discussion regarding the spread of Encephalitis in some parts of the country, A Sampath pointed out that our country is in the grip of many diseases. There is an old saying that prevention is better than cure. What measures have we adopted for preventing these diseases? It is because of the water-logging in vast areas that these diseases are there. So, the main cause is water. We are not able to distinguish between safe drinking water and the water that has been polluted and where mosquitoes breed. Another issue is solid waste management.

ON August 6, minister of state for corporate affairs, Nirmala Sitharaman presented India’s stand at the WTO. Speaking on the clarification on the statement given by the minister, Sitaram Yechury pointed out that since 1994, CPI(M) has been consistently opposing the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade saying that this is detrimental to our country’s interest and now according to the minister’s statement it has proved to be correct. The clarification pertains to Para 8.

IN Lok Sabha, the flood and drought situation was discussed under the Calling Attention. Speaking on this, M B Rajesh pointed out that our country is having diverse climatic condition just as we have diverse culture. As predicted, this year’s monsoon has been weak and there has been a decline in the accumulative rainfall for the country as a whole as compared to the last year. The decline is 43 percent. It is an alarming situation. Out of 617 districts, 434 districts have received deficient rainfall.

DURING the second week of Budget Session both the houses witnessed disruptions over the issue of Indian journalist meeting the terror mastermind Hafiz-Saeed. On this, the external affairs minister made a statement condemning the meeting and said the government had sought a report on the engagements of the journalist in Pakistan during his three week stay there.

IN the beginning of the budget session on July 7, 2014, there was a pandemonium in both the houses. Opposition MPs stormed the well of both the houses protesting against many issues, including increase in prices of essential commodities and petroleum products, rail fare hike, and the ordinance relating to the Andhra Pradesh Re-organisation Bill.

LEADER of the CPI(M) group in Rajya Sabha, Sitaram Yechury has written to the Speaker of Lok Sabha regarding the outrageous remarks made by Trinamool Congress MP, Tapas Paul on July 3.  The letter noted that Tapas Pal, MP in the 16th Lok Sabha from Trinamool Congress had made a highly objectionable statement publicly in a gathering at his constituency Krishnanagar "If anyone from the Opposition dares to touch any women then I will send my boys and get women of CPI(M) raped." He also says that he roams around with 'maal' (revolver) and will not hesitate to use it on his opponents.

IN the new Lok Sabha, the government, led by the BJP, has a comfortable majority --- 281of the BJP on its own and 336 of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) as a whole --- while the Congress has only 44 out of the 543 elected.
As soon as the parliament session started on June 4, 2014, it had to be adjourned after paying homage to Gopinath Munde. Munde, a prominent BJP leader who was appointed the union rural development minister, died in a road accident on June 3, 2014.
