Gruesome Killings of Adivasis in Odisha: CPI(M) Delegation Meets Victims’ Families

THE CPI(M) has condemned the gruesome killings of five Adivasis, after branding them as Maoists, in Gumudumaha village of Kandhamala district of Odisha on July 8 and demanded an SIT probe into the matter under the supervision of the Odisha High Court and that adequate compensation be paid to them. The Party sought an end to the century-old deprivation of a large number of Adivasis in Odisha.

IN today’s Odisha, hardly a day passes without a report of farmer suicide. The total number of farmers committing distressed suicide has crossed 70 in the past three months. However, state ministers and ruling party spokespersons, barring a few exceptions, are engaged in refuting and ridiculing such reports. Collectors of the districts, where farmer suicides have occurred, too have joined their political masters to reject such reports.

District Conference of Odisha Sales Representatives' Union Held

THE 4th Berhampur district conference of Odisha Sales Representatives' Union (OSRU) was held at Sahid Laxman Nayak Community Hall in Berhampur on September 7. CPI(M) state secretariat member Ali Kishore Pattnaik inaugurated the conference. OSRU general secretary Subhnkar Das, who was the chief speaker, discussed the organisational functioning and developments in the sector. Das opposed the anti-worker policies being pursued by the central and state governments.

ODISHA: Protests Held Against Railway Budget

AT the call of the CPI(M) Odisha state committee, demonstration and dharna programmes against the Railway Budget were held before different railway stations of Odisha on July 9, 2014. Suresh Panigrahy, state secretariat member of the Party, Sala Marandi, president of Odisha Adivasi Adhikar Manch, Sarat Das, SFI state secretary led the demonstration.

At Cuttack, the demonstration was led by Rabinarayan Mallick, secretary Cuttack district committee of CPI(M), Pratap Mohapatro, Cuttack local committee secretary, Nirmal Das and others.

‘Declare Odisha Cyclone a National Calamity’ Centre Feels Compelled to Shell out Rs 300 Crore

ON December 5, 2013, a five-member delegation from the Odisha state unit of the CPI(M) met the president of India at New Delhi, followed by a meeting with the union home minister the next day. The delegation consisted of the CPI(M) state secretary Janardan Pati, its state secretariat members Santosh Das, Ali Kishore Patnaik and Bishnu Mohanty, and former MLA Laxman Munda. It was led by CPI(M) Polit Bureau member Sitaram Yechury who is leader of the CPI(M) group in Rajya Sabha and by Basudeb Acharia, leader of the CPI(M) group in Lok Sabha.

Big Demo Demands National Calamity Declaration

THERE was a big applause from the huge crowd which assembled for a demonstration before the state secretariat at Bhubaneswar on November 23, 11, 2013, when the CPI(M)’s Odisha state committee secretary Janardan Pati demanded that the UPA government at the centre must declare the serious disaster which occurred due to the cyclone Phailin, the flood and the incessant rain in mid-October 2013 as a national calamity.
