THE Delhi Union of Journalists (DUJ), in a statement issued on December 20, has strongly condemned the crackdown by Karnataka police on some journalists in Mangalore. The police reportedly detained 12 journalists, most of them reporters and camera persons of Kerala based TV channels, who were covering the police violence on people protesting against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act.

DUJ Warns against Moves to Make India a Surveillance State

THE Delhi Union of Journalists (DUJ), in a statement issued on December 21, has castigated as ominous, unconstitutional and a direct attack on the freedom of the press, the order of the union home ministry authorising central agencies to intercept, monitor and decrypt “any information generated, transmitted, received or stored in any computer.” This order we feel is reminiscent of the dark days of the Emergency, the statement said.

DUJ’s Gender Equity Council Welcomes Editors Guild’s Decision

THE Delhi Union of Journalists’ newly re-constituted gender council, in a statement issued on December 13, has welcomed the move by the Editors Guild of India to suspend from its membership journalist-turned-politician MJ Akbar until the defamation case he filed against the woman journalist Priya Ramani is decided. She had written an expose alleging sexual harassment by him. Akbar now stands accused of sexual harassment and exploitation by at least 20 women journalists. It also welcomes the suspension of Tarun Tejpal.

THE National Alliance of Journalists(NAJ) and its Delhi affiliate – Delhi Union of Journalists(DUJ) along with various other bodies all over the country have come out with solidarity statements at the assassination of Shujaat Bukhari. Massive protests have taken place in the Kashmir valley and a joint solidarity meeting has been held at the Press Club of India in Delhi, on June 18, called by the PCI, IWPC, Press Association and various other organisations. A black day protest in Delhi by the Delhi Union of Journalists was held on June 23, 2018.

Journos Call for Vigilance Day Next Week

SEEING the government’s withdrawal of the I&B ministry’s punish journalist directive as a temporary reprieve and a damage control exercise, the National Alliance of Journalists and Delhi Union of Journalists, in a statement issued on April 4, have called for a vigilance day next week . This is taking into account the fact that the Press Council is toothless and a democratic all-encompassing Media Council of India is the need of the hour. The statement followed the government withdrawal announcement on April 3.

A Victory For Victimised Hindustan Times Workers: DUJ

THE Delhi Union of Journalists, in a statement issued on June 9, has congratulated the workers of Hindustan Times Ltd for yet another legal victory in their prolonged struggle against unfair dismissal by the management. A district court has told the management to “reinstate all the eligible Workmen with effect from 03.10.04 itself”.
