‘Forest Land Cultivators’ Fight Back Police Action

IN Karnataka “Forest land cultivators” or “Bagair-Hukum” cultivators is how the government describes the peasants who have been cultivating the forest land for generations. There are more than 16 lakh such cultivators in the state who have applied for getting the rights over their land. The government however, summarily rejected 12 lakh applications and also the future of the rest is hanging in doubt. These cultivators have been termed as “encroachers”, equated with land grabbers and the government has filed an affidavit to that effect in the High Court.

BANGALORE was a sea of Red on October 13 as more than 20,000 peasants, agricultural workers and rural masses came from across Karnataka and marched for land rights for the landless, rights over the Bagair-Hukum land and forest land being cultivated by over 16 lakh poor peasants, homestead land for the homeless, and against corporate takeover of land. As the unprecedented mobilisation rose up over the Anand Rao Circle Flyover and descended to reach the Freedom Park with thousands of Red flags fluttering high it was a sight to behold.

CPI(M) on Indefinite Dharna for Ending Caste Discrimination in Udupi Temple

IF Chief Minister Siddaramayya is secular and progressive, he should bring an ordinance within 24 hours and prohibit caste discrimination practised in Udupi Sri Krishna temple, demanded G V Sreerama Reddy. He was inaugurating the indefinite dharna called by the CPI(M) state committee at Udupi on May 5. The dharna was held in the backdrop of an incident at Udupi temple on April 15 (Soura Ugadi – Solar New Year Day).
