THE 19th Congress of the Communist Party of China (CPC) was held in Beijing from October 18-24, 2017. The theme of the Congress was: ‘Remain true to our original aspiration and keep our mission firmly in mind, hold high the banner of socialism with Chinese characteristics, secure a decisive victory in building a moderately prosperous society in all respects, strive for the great success of socialism with Chinese characteristics for a new era, and work tirelessly to realise the Chinese Dream of national rejuvenation’.

Centenary Celebrations of October Revolution in Russia

THE centenary celebrations of the Great October Socialist Revolution concluded in Moscow with a rally on November 7. It was attended by not only comrades from Moscow but also leaders of over 100 communist and workers parties from across the world, as the 19th International Meeting of Communist and Workers’ Parties (IMCWP) was held in Russia. In the morning, on November 7, there was a military parade at the Red Square in front of the Kremlin, marking the 76th anniversary of the Red Army Parade at the time of preparing for countering the Nazi invasion of the USSR.

The Opening Session of the 19th National Congress of the Communist Party of China (CPC) was held at the People’s Great Hall of China at 9:00, October 18th, 2017.

On behalf of the 18th CPC Central Committee, General Secretary Xi Jinping delivered a report titled “Secure a decisive victory in building a moderately prosperous society in all respects and strive for the great success of socialism with Chinese characteristics for a new era”.

Pulling out of the Iran Deal: Or Humpty Drumpf-ty’s Impending Fall

LAST week, Trump decertified the Iran nuclear deal – known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) – while, at the same time, not pulling out of it. He has asked the US Congress to put in additional sanctions on Iran, so that Iran “behaves” the way US wants it. This is after months of threatening to quit the deal – in his view the worst deal ever – and blaming Iran for not observing the “spirit” of the agreement, whatever that means.

Todos Somos Venezuela: Global Solidarity Meet at Caracas Denounces US Economic and Military Aggression against Venezuela

MORE than 200 participants from 60 countries representing five continents, including India, gathered at an International Solidarity Summit held in Caracas from September 16-19, 2017 in defense of the Venezuelan people and the Bolivarian revolution, and to denounce the attempts of the US administration to stifle the country by imposing financial sanctions, as also Trump’s direct threat of war against Venezuela just a few weeks back. 

The Afghan Quagmire

DONALD Trump on the campaign trail was an avowed anti-interventionist. He had kept on repeating that the American led wars in Iraq and Afghanistan in particular were ill advised and a costly drain on the country's exchequer. With reference to the war in Afghanistan, Trump had said that it was time to get out of the country. The American military under the Trump administration is showing no signs of leaving Iraq either. And, unlike his predecessor, Barack Obama, Trump crossed a red line in Syria by ordering Cruise missile strikes against Syria on the flimsiest of pretexts.

On the Rohingyas Issue

The South Asian Regional Seminar of Communist and Left parties expresses its serious concern about the grave humanitarian crisis regarding the Rohingyas who have been rendered as human beings belonging to nowhere as a result of the incessant terror and acts of violence in the Rakhine state of Myanmar. Rohingya population are forced to leave their homes and hearths and move to neighbouring countries in order to survive. Bangladesh has borne the brunt of such an exodus of refugees.

Korean Peninsula on the Edge

THE last couple of months have seen the crisis in the Korean peninsula escalating to unprecedented levels and there are no indications that the dangerous situation is going to be defused any time soon, going by the statements coming from Washington. In the first week of September, even as BRICS leaders had started assembling in the Chinese city of Xiamen for their annual summit, North Korea conducted its most powerful nuclear test so far.
