AIDWA-SFI-DYFI Protest Against Purification Rituals Demeaning to Women

THE All India Democratic Women’s Association (AIDWA), Students’ Federation of India (SFI) and Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI) held a militant protest on January 4 on the road towards Parliament House against the purification rituals carried out by the priests after two women entered the Sabarimala temple. They also denounced the violence let loose by the RSS-BJP in Kerala on January 3. Women and students marched from Vithalbhai Patel House towards Parliament House, brushing aside all attempts by the police to stop them. They were finally stopped by barricades near Vijay Chowk.

AIDWA Condemns Army Chief’s Statement on Women

The All India Democratic Women’s Association (AIDWA), in a statement issued on December 18, has strongly condemned the totally unwarranted sexist remarks recently made by Army chief Bipin Rawat on the question of women being inducted into combat roles in the army. While AIDWA is wholly opposed to the brazen militarism that high-ups in the army are found to voice frequently in public in recent times, it is even more obnoxious to find them exposing with impunity their utterly insulting and warped attitude not only to women aspiring towards a military career but to women in general.

AIDWA Calls for Nationwide Protests to Condemn Anti-Women Modi Regime

THE central executive committee meeting of the All India Democratic Women’s Association held recently in Hyderabad decided to organise protests in all districts in the country on December 10, International Human Rights Day, to condemn the anti-women Modi regime. These protests will highlight the issues of violence, food security and unemployment, which were taken up in a big way by the AIDWA’s 10,000-strong all India Delhi Rally on September 4. State and district level issues too will be taken up in these protests. Thousands of women will be mobilised in these protest actions.

Proposed ‘New Deal’ for Women is a Hoax

REPLYING to Congress president, Rahul Gandhi’s letter on the women’s reservation bill, the law minister, Ravi Shankar Prasad wrote: “….the BJP and the Congress, should come together and over a 'new deal' to Indian women to ensure equality and adequate representation. As part of this 'new deal', we should approve, in both houses of parliament, the women reservation bill, the law prohibiting Triple Talaq and imposing penal consequence on those who violate the law, and the law prohibiting Nikah Halala.

AIDWA to Hold Delhi Rally on Sept 4

KEEPING in mind the challenges before women, AIDWA has decided to organise a huge all India women’s protest rally in Delhi on September 4. The main issues are the increasing violence and brutality against women, especially girl children, growing unemployment, food security, the grim issue of starvation and malnutrition and the escalating communal and casteist attacks. The rally will be directed against the anti-women and anti-people policies of the BJP-RSS regime led by Narendra Modi.

AIDWA Demands Strong Action in the Jharkhand Gang Rape Case

THE All India Democratic Women’s Association (AIDWA), in a statement   issued on June 4, has condemned in the strongest terms, the gang rape of the five NGO women workers in the Kochang village in Khunti district of Jharkhand.  The brazen manner in which the women were abducted at gun-point and raped and then silenced into not reporting the crime reflects the total lawlessness and the atmosphere of terror prevalent in the BJP-ruled state.

‘Encounters’ of Minorities & Poor under Yogi Raj in UP

UTTAR Pradesh will be crime free – was the much-touted slogan of Yogi Adityanath after he became the chief minister. The illegal method of eliminating crime, aka ‘encounters’, started in 2017. “Thok do” (shoot them) was the dictum given to police officials to gun down criminals. It is a different matter that the chief miniter himself is facing 15 criminal cases and 143 MLAs of the state have criminal cases registered against them, of whom 83 are from the ruling BJP.

VIOLATION OF PCPNDT ACT: AIDWA Demands Stringent Action on VC

THE All India Democratic Women’s Association, in a statement issued on May 14, has condemned the shocking statement reportedly made by the vice chancellor of AYUSH, Baldev Kumar Dhiman, claiming that ayurveda can help in the selection of gender before conception. Not only does this display a completely unscientific mindset, the statement also violates the PcPNDT Act which makes sex selection illegal, whether before or after conception. According to the Act it is also illegal to advertise or promote any method leading to sex selection.

Is Death Penalty the Right Solution?

THE huge public outcry and resentment at the increasing incidents of rapes and sexual offences against women today can well be understood and appreciated. In a country where a woman is reportedly raped every 15 minutes (this, despite many rape cases still going unreported), and where a woman is a victim of crime every two minutes, such outrage is a natural reaction, particularly when law makers and law protectors become accomplice to such heinous acts, as demonstrated in Kathua and Unnao rape cases.
