THE Polit Bureau of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) mourns the passing away of Comrade Bajuban Riyan, former Central Committee member and veteran leader of CPI(M) in Tripura, on February 21, 2020 at ILS Hospital, Agartala. He was 80 years old.
THE start of the Second World War in 1939 had a tremendous impact on the political developments in India. The British viceroy, without consulting any of the Indian representatives, declared India also a participant in the war. Following the declaration of war, prices of essential commodities shot up. People were discontented at the resulting rise in the cost of living. The Communist Party immediately came out with a declaration opposing the war.

THE agrarian sector should take steps to increase production and improve productivity to tackle the agrarian crisis, CPI(M) Polit Bureau member S Ramachandran Pillai has said.
He also said the sector required more investments, manpower and latest technologies to make it profitable.
A NATIONAL convention against privatisation of BPCL was held at the BPCL Kochi refinery premises on February 9, 2020 under the banner of all the three national federations, AIPWF, NFPW and PGWFI. Delegates from all over the country representing all the branches of oil and natural gas - production, refining, pipeline and marketing representing ONGC, OIL, GAIL, IOCL, BPCL, HPCL, MRPL, Balmer Lawrie, Pawan Hans and more participated in the convention.
THE central working committee of the All India Agricultural Workers Union (AIAWU) said that the union budget 2020-21 is pro-corporate and anti-people. In a two-day meeting held in Delhi from February 19, the committee discussed various issues concerning the agrarian sector including methods to strengthen the public distribution system, efficient implementation of central flagship and other welfare schemes and passed resolution against the decision of the Supreme Court on reservations for SC/ST/OBCs in government jobs and promotions.
THE novel coronavirus or COVID-19 epidemic appears to be under control in China, but could create new epicentres in South Korea, Italy and Iran. If this happens and creates multiple countries acting as new centres of the epidemic, we could be moving towards a pandemic. South Korea saw 214 new infections on February 24, though reports indicate a sharp drop in new infections. Northern Italy is now under lockdown, and has emerged as another centre of the epidemic, with people returning from Italy spreading the infections to other countries.
CLASS struggle occurs in the realm of concepts too. The World Bank for instance systematically counters Left concepts by employing a novel tactic: it uses the very same concepts as are used by the Left, but gives them a wholly different meaning; as a result they either come to mean something entirely different from what the Left had originally meant by them, or, at the very least, they become fuzzy and hence useless to the Left. In either case the power of the Left concept is neutralised.
