KERALA: Unfounded Allegations to Shield Real Culprits

Below we publish the statement issued by Kodiyeri Balakrishnan, CPI(M) Kerala state secretary, on July 11, 2020

EVEN as the NIA has taken up investigation into the Thiruvananthapuram gold smuggling case, unfounded allegations are being made so as to shield the real culprits, by creating a smoke screen. The people will realise that both the BJP and the UDF are only trying to further their vested political interests even amidst this pandemic, that too at the cost of people’s lives.

HARYANA: Terminated PTI Teachers Launch Struggle

THE PTI (physical training instructors) teachers, 1983 in number,  were appointed by the Haryana Staff Selection Board (HSSB) on April 10, 2020. The PTI teachers were then posted in schools across the state of Haryana. Those who were not selected challenged the selection procedure in the Punjab and Haryana High Court. The high court passed an order on September 11, 2002 and set aside the selection of the PTI teachers. The PTI teachers and the Haryana government challenged this order of the high court in the supreme court.

TAMIL NADU: Workers Pay with their Lives for Neglect of Safety by NLC

WITH the ending of the national level ‘lockdown’ and the commencement of the ‘unlock’ process, we have seen some major industrial accidents across the country. This article relates to the two accidents that took place in the second thermal power station (TPS II) at Neyveli in Tamil Nadu, belonging to the Neyveli Lignite Corporation (NLC), a government of India PSU, on May 7 and July 1.

Gold Smuggling Case: People of Kerala Will See the Real Colours of the BJP - UDF

IT is clear that the political and economic interests of the Congress, the BJP and a section of media have created a smokescreen and is trying to distract the investigation from the issue of gold smuggling. The basic and crucial questions are: who smuggled the gold, who did it for whom, for how long has it been happening, which are the forces that helped it, and who all benefited from it.

Garib Kalyan Rojgar Abhiyaan: A Travesty on Migrant Workers

WHILE the whole country is fighting against the novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19), the priority of the BJP is to manage Rajya Sabha elections and campaign for the Bihar state assembly elections.

The launch of ‘Garib Kalyan Rojgar Abhiyaan’ by prime minister Narendra Modi on June 20, 2020, is nothing but an extension of the election campaign through government machinery.

The campaign was launched from Telihar village of Beldaur block of Bihar’s Khagaria district.

Unscrupulous Politics in Kerala

THE gold smuggling case in Kerala is being used by the Congress-led UDF and the BJP to tarnish the image of the LDF government and a joint effort to destabiliSe the government headed by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan.

The Congress and the UDF have demanded the resignation of the chief minister and have launched a “struggle” to achieve the same. The BJP is also conducting protests with the same demand. The UDF had announced that it will move a no-confidence motion against the government in the assembly.

Deception on Poverty

THERE is much self-congratulatory back-slapping among governments, the World Bank officials and many economists about the “decline in poverty” that is supposed to have occurred between 1990 and the onset of the recent pandemic. This decline is claimed on the basis of an International Poverty Line (IPL) of $ 1.90 a day (at 2011 Purchasing Power Parity) worked out by the Bank, which basically defines poverty across the world as lack of access over one day to the bundle of goods that $1.90 would have bought in the US in 2011.
