WB: Massive Gathering amid Rain in Kolkata for Martyrs’ Day Meet

MARTYRS ' Day was observed in Kolkata on August 31, in memory of the martyrs of the 1959 food movement that had culminated into a rally of thousands of hunger marchers who went to Esplanade, Kolkata, on August 31 to demand adequate food for all and were brutally lathi-charged by the police without any warning and without any provocation whatsoever, leaving 80 dead.Since then, August 31 has been observed as Martyrs Day on a massive scale every year.  The Left Front announced a meeting on August 31 this year at Esplanade in memory of the martyrs.

National Tyre Workers’ Convention

THE All India Tyre Workers’ Convention took place in Kottayam, Kerala on August 20, 2023. The convention commenced with the flag hoisting ceremony led by CITU vice-president A Soundararajan. Welcoming the delegates, CITU national secretary and Kerala general secretary, Elamaram Kareem MP, extended his greetings. The convention, presided over by CITU national secretary K Chandran Pillai, saw the participation of 162 representatives from tyre workers across 13 manufacturing plants spanning five states: Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, Kerala, Telangana, and Karnataka.

AP: Protests against Price Rise and Unemployment

RESPONDING to the call given by the CPI(M) Central Committee to organise protests against price rise and unemployment, the Andhra Pradesh state committee of the CPI(M) held various protest activities from August 30 to September 4.The Party State Committee implemented the campaign in a phased manner across various levels. Door-to-door distribution of pamphlets explaining the policies of both the central and state governments, focusing on issues related to the rising prices and unemployment took place on August 30-31, during which signatures were collected from residents.

CPI(M) Delegation Visits Muzaffarnagar

A CPI(M) delegation comprising Polit Bureau member Subhashini Ali and John Brittas, member of parliament, Rajya Sabha visited the family of the young Muslim boy on August 30, who had been so cruelly treated by his teacher who is also the owner of the school.The delegation met Irshad and Rubina, the boy’s parents, and the young boy in their joint family home in village Khubbapur, Muzaffarnagar. They are poor people.  Their two older sons are working in Chandigarh.

AIKS Holds Workshop for Hindi States

THE Hindi states workshop organised by the All India Kisan Sabha (AIKS) on August 25-26, 2023 at Harkishan Singh Surjeet Bhawan in New Delhi was a successful and encouraging initiative. It was envisaged as a workshop focusing on current political challenges and organisation. 86 leading AIKS activists from 15 states attended.The workshop was planned in the context of the enthusiasm and growing struggles, especially in the Hindi Belt region, on genuine demands of the peasantry facing acute agrarian crisis.
