Celebrating Champaran 1917

AT a moment when the ideals and events of our national movement seem to be fading from public memory, it is gratifying, indeed, that there should be celebrations in this country of the centenary of one of the most remarkable episodes of modern Indian history, the Champaran Satyagraha of 1917.Ever since Plessey (1757) British rule had meant a constant exploitation of India, the main burden of which had fallen on its peasants, artisans and the labouring poor.

Indian History Congress Meets at Malda for its 76th Session

THE Indian History Congress met at Malda, West Bengal, for its three-day 76th annual session from December 27-29,  2015, under the aegis of the Gour-Banga University. About 1200 delegates from all over the country attended the session.Professor K Paddayya, eminent archaeologist, took over as general president for the ensuing year, and delivered his presidential address at the inaugural session on December 27. Professor Paddayya is currently Professor Emeritus at the Deccan College University (Pune), the Mecca of Indian archaeologists, of which he has also been the director.

TELANGANA ARMED STRUGGLE HEROINE: Chakali Ilamma Statue Unveiled

THE unfinished agenda of the heroic Telangana armed struggle -- land reforms -- must be taken up with new vigor, said CPI(M) Polit Bureau member Brinda Karat in Palakurti town of Warangal district  in Telangana on September 10. She was addressing a public meeting after the unveiling of a statue of Chakali Ilamma, the heroic Telangana armed struggle fighter.

Indian History Congress Holds its 75th Annual Session in New Delhi

The Indian History Congress held its 75th (Platinum Jubilee) session on December 28-30, 2014 at the Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi. Over 1,500 delegates from all parts of India attended the session, and, as per the printed list of papers, 930 papers were submitted for presentation at its six major sections.                The session was inaugurated on  December 28 by Hamid Ansari, vice president of India, who, by reference to major perceptions of historiography as a craft, enjoined Indian historians to maintain both rigour and objectivity in their use of historical evidence.

Comrade Jyoti Basu: The Last of the Navaratnas

JULY 8, 2014 marks the culmination of the birth centenary year of Comrade Jyoti Basu, one of the most outstanding leaders of the Left movement in India, the longest-serving chief minister in the country who led West Bengal for nearly a quarter century, and the last of the CPI(M) Navaratnas. These Navaratnas – and innumerable other veteran Communist leaders of that generation – made immense contributions and untold sacrifices during extremely difficult times for the building of the CPI(M) and the Left movement in India.

We are reproducing below a slightly edited article by Comrade M Basavapunnaiah that appeared in a special issue of People’s Democracy commemorating the birth centenary of V I Lenin (April 22, 1970). This is being done both as a tribute to Comrade MB’s understanding of the Leninst tactics and for the importance of these being based on concrete analysis of concrete conditions. Secondly, this article is being reprinted on the occasion of Lenin’s 144th birth anniversary that falls on April 22, 2014.
