TN: Platform for People's Unity Holds Mini Marathon

A MINI marathon was organised by the Salem district unit of Tamil Nadu Platform for People's Unity on January 28, at Salem town’s Gandhi playground, to promote unity and communal harmony.                      

Thousands of youth, boys and girls, enthusiastically participated in the mini marathon that started in the morning at 7:30 am.

The team that organised the marathon conducted an extensive outreach programme in the city's schools and colleges. Prizes totaling more than Rs1 lakh were distributed among the winners, with the first prize winner receiving Rs 20,000, the second prize winner Rs 15,000, and the third prize winner Rs 10,000. Five consolation prizes of Rs 1,000 each were awarded to other participants.

The marathon, spanning five kilometres, traversed through the heart of the city, conveying messages of harmony, unity, and peace. A stage was set up in the playground where participants engaged in heroic games, and various cultural programmes were showcased. The prize distribution ceremony was attended by cine actress Rohini, director Gautam Raj, Haja Gani (general secretary, TMMK), G Udayakumar (state coordinator of TNPPU), and Dr Vimal Das.

The prize money was generously sponsored by various commercial firms and institutions in Salem city. Addressing the programme, Rohini emphasized that the marathon aimed to promote communal harmony and people's unity. She also announced her support for the CPI(M) candidates in the upcoming parliamentary elections, and added that the prime minister who was visiting Tamil Nadu had not done anything for the people of the state. She asserted that the people of Tamil Nadu will reject Narendra Modi. We have begun the work of changing the political situation from southern India, she highlighted.

Prominent personalities from diverse backgrounds in Salem city actively participated in the programme, with Sethuraman, the district coordinator of TNPPU, presiding over it. The organisation of the marathon was led by Praveen Kumar and Shanmugaraja of CPI(M), who played pivotal roles in ensuring its success.
