LDF Landslide Victory in Kerala

NS Sajith

WITH massive landslide victory in elections for the 14th assembly elections in Kerala, CPI(M) led Left Democratic Front is set to form the government.  CPI(M) led LDF has won 91 seats and the Congress led United Democratic Front managed to get just 47 seats. For the first time in the history of the state, BJP got one seat with the tacit understanding with the Congress. Fighting against both fronts, former chief whip, P C George won in Poonjar. The ruling front has got routed in Kollam district where the LDF won all 11 seats with a huge margin. LDF has got impressive leads in districts like Thrissur, Kannur, Kozhikode, Palakkad, Idukki and Pathanamthitta. The front has made a breakthrough in the Congress strongholds in Eranakulam and Muslim League bastions in Malappuram.

Prominent CPI(M) leaders have registered huge victories in their constituencies. Polit Bureau member Pinarayi Vijayan won in Dharmadom with a margin of 36,905 votes. Opposition leader V S Achuthanandan registered third consecutive victory in Malampuazha with a majority of 27,142 votes. Central Committee member E P Jayarajan won with second largest margin in the state of 43,381 votes. Central Committee members K K Shailaja (Koothuparamb - lead 12,291), Dr T M Thomas Isaac (Alappuzha - lead 31,032), A K Balan (Tharoor, lead 23,068) have emerged victorious. State secretariat members T Ramakrishnan also won in Perambra and Udumbanchola respectively.

People’s mandate against corruption was evident as four ministers, K Babu (Thrippunithura), Shibu Baby John (Chavara), P K Jayalakshmi (Mananthavadi), K P Mohanan (Koothuparamb) have lost miserably. Assembly speaker N Shaktan and deputy speaker Palod Ravi, chief whip Thomas Unniyadan also faced defeat in their constituencies.

Primary analysis shows that peoples have registered a vote against the corrupt government in which almost all ministers faced serious corruption charges. At the same time it shows that people’s mandate is in favor of secularism and people friendly development. Though the BJP has dispensed huge amount of money and power, it has won in only Nemom constituency in Thiruvananthapuram district. BJP’s alliance with BDJS, a newly formed political platform led by SNDP general secretary Vellappalli Nateshan did not pay off.  The unholy alliance with the BJP and the Congress was evident as the UDF candidate in Nemom finished a distant third with just 13,800 votes. O Rajagopal won with 67,813 votes. CPI(M)’s V Sivan Kutty finished second in the race with 59,142 votes. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, BJP president Amit Shah and central minister J P Nadda concentrated in various constituencies like Nemom, Vattiyoorkkav in Thiruvananthapuram. These efforts ended up only in a maiden victory in Nemam and second position in seven constituencies. Former LDF ministers G Sudhakaran, Mullakara Ratnakaran, C Divakaran have won again in their constituencies. Journalists turned politician Veena George CPI(M) won in Aranmula but another Journalist Nikesh Kumar lost in Azhikkode with a narrow margin. Film stars M Mukesh CPI(M) and K B Ganesh Kumar (Kerala Congress B) have won in Kollam and Pathanapuram respectively. RSP and JDU which was previously with LDF and later joined with UDF have lost all seats. Kerala Congress (Democratic), CMP ended up with a miserable zero. Muhammed Muhsin (CPI) a JNU scholar emerged victorious in Pattambi. K K Shailaja, J Mercy Kuttiamma,  Aysha Potti, , Veena George, U Prathibha Hari from   CPI (M) E S Bijimol Geetha Gopi, C K Asha from CPI are the women representatives. UDF has no woman MLA.

Chief Minister Oommen Chandy, revenue minister Adoor Prakash, forest minister Thiruvanchoor, former finance minister and Kerala Congress leader K M Mani, ministers A P Anilkumar, P K Kunjalikkutti, P K Abdurabb, Manjalamkuzhi Ali have won.
