CPI(M) Greets CP of Sri Lanka on its 20th Congress

The following is the text of the message of greetings sent by the Central Committee of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) to the Communist Party of Sri Lanka on its 20th Congress, which was held from July 25-27. DEAR Comrades, The Communist Party of India (Marxist) greets the Communist Party of Sri Lanka on its 20 Congress and wishes it all success. On this occasion, we greet the leadership and all the members of the Party and reiterate our heartfelt solidarity. Sri Lanka and India, two close neighbours, share close socio-economic, cultural bonds dating back to many centuries. As sister-communist parties, we inherit the rich legacy of the freedom struggle of our respective countries. The CPSL, formed in 1943, played an exemplary role in the fight against imperialism and also against all forms of reaction in the society. In today's world situation, imperialism is trying hard to ensure its hold over all the regions that are rich in resources and also the commercial navigation routes. It is actively encouraging destabilising efforts in West Asia in the name of 'constructive chaos', for the realisation of its project, 'New Middle East'. Israel, with the tacit support of the US has launched an all out attack on Gaza and is continuing with its occupation of Palestinian territories in contravention of various international treaties and laws. The US is openly supporting the neo-Nazis and the Kiev regime in Ukraine to expand its influence in the European continent uptil the borders of Russia. It is the innocent people who are losing their precious lives due to the mayhem unleashed by the lackeys of imperialism in these regions. Lately, the US wants to concentrate its attention on the Asia-Pacific region, declaring Asia as 'pivot' to its interests and has hence decided to deploy 60 percent of its naval fleet in the region. All these are ominous signals to humanity. The prolonged global economic crisis had further intensified the burdens on people with hunger, unemployment, economic inequalities, poverty and destitution on the rise all around. Marx had taught us long back that capitalism is a social system based on human exploitation and laden with crises – intrinsic and inherent in the manner it organises production. The present crisis, once again proves the validity of Marxism-Leninism. All the efforts for managing the crisis within the limits of capitalism are bound to fail. No amount of crises can ensure the fall of the system on its own, it 'needs to be overthrown' as Lenin had proved with the Great October Socialist Revolution. He had expertly used the sharpening contradictions generated from the crisis and the resultant First World War – whose centenary is being, today, observed worldwide – to establish the first Socialist state. The historical responsibility of overthrowing capitalism is upon us, communists, now. This is possible only by the strengthening of the 'subjective factor', the Party of the working class, as Lenin used to call it and intensify our struggles against the present exploitative capitalist system. Comrades, As you are aware, the CPI(M) and the Left had suffered an electoral setback in the recently concluded general elections to the Indian parliament. The right-wing Hindu fundamentalist forces, represented by the BJP won a comfortable majority on their own and formed the government. They are backed by the big bourgeoisie in the country. As the events unfolding in our country show, the government is totally unconcerned about the plight of the common people. It had already increased the rail fares and prices of essential commodities too are on the rise. On the other hand, attacks on religious minorities and those who are critical of the government too are on the rise. The ruling class and their parties are trying their level best to politically isolate our Party and stifle our voice. In West Bengal, one of our strongholds, the level of attacks carried on our Party and cadre is unprecedented. Hundreds of our comrades were brutally murdered, thousands of our comrades are forced to leave their homes and villages along with their families. 'Rape' has become a political weapon in the hands of our political opponents. The State machinery is largely silent, allowing the perpetrators to roam free. What is behind all these attacks is an attempt by the ruling classes to undo all the benefits that had accrued to the people of Bengal during the 34 years of Left Front rule. Our Party is engaged in this bitter class struggle, resisting all their attempts to reverse the gains made by the working class and poor peasants. We are confident that the Party, guided by the principles of Marxism-Leninism, will not only withstand these attacks, but also repulse them to emerge stronger. Comrades, CPSL and CPI(M) historically share deep bonds of friendship and fraternal relations. We are confident that the CPSL will work for an expeditious political settlement of the Tamil question which would involve the comprehensive devolution of powers for the Tamil-speaking areas within the framework of a united Sri Lanka. We feel that such a political solution will strengthen the unity and integrity of Sri Lanka. On this occasion of the 20th Congress of the Communist Party of Sri Lanka, we once again reiterate our solidarity and affirm that the CPI (M) will stand shoulder-to-shoulder with you in your struggle against imperialism and for a society free from exploitation.
