Proposed Population Control Legislation Violation of Human Rights

WOMEN'S groups and networks, health experts and concerned individuals from civil society, on July 19, have submitted a memorandum to the President of India, through an email, raising concerns and opposing the draft Uttar Pradesh Population (Control, Stabilization and Welfare) Bill, 2021.

The draft bill has been developed by the State Law Commission. The provisions include barring persons with more than two children from contesting municipal and panchayat elections, disqualifying from government jobs, disincentives in education, health and other social security spheres.

Tarun Tejpal Judgment Disturbing, Legally Unsound

THE judgment by a trial court in Goa acquitting Tarun Tejpal in a sexual assault is shocking and “deeply disturbing”, a statement issued by over 300 women’s groups and individuals said.
The statement said the judgment will prove to be a “hindrance to women filing and fighting rape cases”.

“The judgement showcases the kind of gruelling trial that a survivor of sexual assault has to face in an insensitive court atmosphere and the relentless, cruel and often scandalous, illegal and irrelevant cross examination that a prosecutrix also faces,” the statement said.

Neither Contempt nor Malice in the letter: Brinda Karat

ON March 5, 2021, Brinda Karat, Member Polit Bureau of the CPI(M) issued a response letter to the Bar Council of India. It may be mentioned here that Brinda Karat had written a letter to the chief justice of India regarding his remarks in open court in two cases pertaining to women. This letter was published in these columns in the previous issue. Later, the Bar Council of India adopted a resolution referring to the name of Brinda Karat and her letter written to the CJI.
In response to that, Brinda Karat wrote a letter, the contents of which are given below.

AIDWA Deplores Acquittal of POCSO Accused

THE All India Democratic Women’s Association (AIDWA), in a statement issued on January 27, has denounced the judgement of the Nagpur Bench of the Bombay High Court which has acquitted an accused of the charge of sexual assault of a 12-year old girl under Section 7 of Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) by saying that since there was no skin-to-skin contact with sexual intent, no case was made out. The high court overruled the sentence of three years given by the trial court.

Arrest the Attackers of Jharna Das: AIDWA

THE All-India Democratic Women’s Association (AIDWA) in a press note issued on January 19, strongly condemned the murderous assault on its national joint secretary and Tripura state secretary, Jharna Das Baidya, MP Rajya Sabha on January 17 by a gang of 30 BJP hoodlums in Agartala town, capital of Tripura. The AIDWA alleged that these hoodlums followed her on motorbikes when she was returning home, threatening and abusing her. They were armed with lathis, hockey sticks, iron rods, etc. These goons barged into her house and ransacked it.

Women Condemn Badaun Rape and Murder, Demand Immediate Arrest of Main Culprit

SIX women organisations; AIDWA, NFIW, AIPWA, PMS, AIMSS and AIAMS in a press note released on January 7, condemned the January 3 incident of gang-rape, torture and murder of an anganwadi worker by a mahant (priest)and his henchmen in Badaun, Uttar Pradesh. The woman sometimes used to visit the temple presided over by the main culprit and when she did not return, her family started looking for her. The mangled body of the woman was brought back in a car and left in front of her home.

In Defence Of Democracy and Farmers’ Movement

DECEMBER 2, leaders of various organisations held an online press conference in support of the demands of the farmers. These organisations include: AIDWA, AIPSN, AIPWA, AIMSS, ANVESAN, Financial Accountability Network (India), Forum for Trade Justice, INSAF, Janwadi Lekhak Sangh, Nation for Farmers, NFIW, People First, PUCL, Right to Food Campaign and Working Group on IFIs

Justice for LSR Student

THE Delhi state committee of the All India Democratic Women’s Association (AIDWA), in a statement issued on November 9, expressed dismay at the recent death of a promising young woman, who came to study in the national capital with a bundle of dreams. A second-year BA Mathematics student of LSR College was forced to end her life on November 3, 2020.
