A STRONG political alternative can only root out the capitalist system, CPI(M) general secretary Sitaram Yechury said at a seminar organised at the MB Vignana Kendram in Vijayawada on May 12 to mark the bicentennial birth anniversary of Karl Marx.

On the occasion, a Telegu translation of Karl Marx’s magnum opus ‘Das Kapital’ (Capital) was released by Yechury and CPI general secretary Suravaram Sudhakara Reddy.

Dalits, Tribals Worst Affected by Govt’s Land Policies

DALITS and tribals are the worst affected by the dictatorial land policies of the ruling classes, JNU professor Praveen Jha has said. Addressing a seminar on ‘Contemporary India – Government as Land-grabber’, organised by M B Vignan Kendram in Vijayawada on the 25TH death anniversary of Comrade Makineni Basava Punnayya, Prof. Jha said that during 1947-1990, 2.31 crore people were displaced for various projects, whereas during 1990-2000, a staggering six crore people were displaced and seventy per cent of them were dalits and tribals.

ANDHRA PRADESH: CPI(M) Padayatra Culminates in a Big Rally

THE Chandra Babu Naidu government is playing with the lives of the people in the merged mandals of Polavaram project by neglecting their sufferings – thundered Brinda Karat in a public meeting held on the culmination of the CPI(M) padayatra, at Chintoor in Andhra Pradesh.

The padayatra was undertaken from November 4-28, from Etapaka to Chintoor, and it traversed 225 villages covering around 600 kilometres. This padayatra was led by Sunnam Rajayya, MLA, T Arun, secretary, East Godavari district committee and was accompanied by scores of Party cadres.

Satyavati locked up in Tanaku jail, in West Godavari for the last month had a solidarity visit by Brinda Karat, CPI(M) Polit Bureau member and others in the jail on October 13. She and thousands of others have been in a struggle to protect their land and livelihood from the setting up of an aqua food processing park which is highly polluting and will affect both agriculture and fishing in thirty villages.

UNABATED repression and police highhandedness marked the visit of CPI(M) Andhra Pradesh state secretary P Madhu and other Left leaders to Bhimavaram in West Godavari district where villagers have been protesting against the setting up of a mega food park. The proposed Aqua Food Park is one of the 42 mega units sanctioned by the erstwhile UPA-II government. The food park intends to provide processing and storage facilities for fish and prawn in East and West Godavari districts of Andhra Pradesh.

Complete Bandh demanding Special Category Status

The state bandh call given by CPI(M),CPI, Congress and YSR Congress over the betrayal of the centre to  accord  special category status for Andhra Pradesh has received popular response and has paralysed the state despite the herculean efforts made by Chandrababu Naidu government to foil the same. The bandh evoked solid response in all the important cities and towns of the state.
 Several shops at various centres remained closed till evening as the traders too joined the bandh. Various marches were organised by the CPI(M),CPI,YSR Party activists in different parts of the state.

THE people of northern Andhra Pradesh should wage a relentless battle against the proposed nuclear power plant at Kovvada in Srikhakulam district as such a struggle alone can repel the move, CPI(M) Polit Bureau member Prakash Karat said. Addressing a seminar in Visakhapatnam on July 17, he said that if not stopped, the nuclear power plant, being set up at the behest of the US, will have grave consequences for the people.
