NPRD condemns attack on disabled

 

THE National Platform for the Rights of the Disabled (NPRD) strongly condemns the brutal violence perpetrated by the Delhi Police on students and teachers of Jawaharlal Nehru University who were holding a peaceful protest against the massive hike in fees and their right to an affordable and accessible education on November 18.

Central Trade Unions also lend support to JNU students

ON November 19, joint platform of central trade unions comprising INTUC,   AITUC, HMS, CITU, AIUTUC, LPF, SEWA, UTUC, AICCTU, TUCC and    MEC has strongly condemned condemns the police action against the JNU students during their Parliament march. In this police action many students have sustained serious injuries and women students have been assaulted by male constables. We demand that action be taken against the police officials responsible for such an action.

West Bengal: Massive Rally Floods East Midnapore

LATEST in a series of large mobilisations by CPI(M) , a massive rally was held in Chandipur, East Midnapore on November 18. Thousands of people from all over the district gathered with red flags in Chandipur, close to Nandigram. The rally was culmination of intensive campaign on peoples’ issues. Party leaders and activists visited more than 200 village panchayats and more than 100 municipal wards and talked with people. In door to door campaign they exchanged views and listened to peoples’ grievances against TMC rule.

Ayodhya and the consolidation of Hindu Nationalists, 1855-1992

THE Ayodhya verdict is finally out and as expected, it displays the influencing of the Hindu right on the judicial system to legalise a long history of illegal encroachment by powerful ‘Hindu interests’ over a mosque that was demolished on December 6, 1992. In its final analysis the judgement adjudicates the title suit by arguing that the so called ‘Hindu’ side has been able to prove its uninterrupted worship at the site since the pre-1856 period also.

Supreme Court Failings

THE Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, Ranjan Gogoi, retired on November 17.  Justice S A Bobde has taken over charge as the new chief justice of India.  This is an appropriate time to look at what is happening to the highest judicial court of the land.  The Supreme Court is entrusted with the duty of ensuring that the laws adopted by Parliament are in conformity with Constitution and that the constitutional rights of citizens are safeguarded. 

Economy is in Virtual Recession: Modi Government in Total Denial

ON the first day of the winter session of Parliament, the finance minister has stated that though the economy has slowed down, it is well on the target of reaching a $5 trillion economy by 2025.  At the current rates of growth, notwithstanding all the data fudging and efforts to show the economy is recovering, the reality is that India’s growth rate is declining steadily and dangerously. 

Electoral Bonds: Danger to Democracy

IF there was any further proof needed about the toxic nature of electoral bonds, it has been provided by the revelation that both the Reserve Bank of India and the Election Commission had strongly objected to the proposal. 

The Huffington Post has carried reports based on RTI queries that set out the objections raised by the RBI and the Election Commission and how the government summarily rejected their views and even lied about the Election Commission’s comments in Parliament.
