Comrade Mohammed Nizamuddin

THE secretariat of the Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU) expressed its profound grief at the passing away of Comrade Mohammed Nizamuddin, veteran trade union leader from West Bengal, general secretary of the All India Beedi Workers’ Federation and a member of the all India working committee of CITU. He passed away in Kolkata on June 21, 2016 at the age of 83. In a statement issued on June 21, CITU said that Comrade Nizamuddin played an important role in organising the beedi workers and other sections of unorganised workers in West Bengal and in his over six decades of active trade union and political life, he led many struggles of the unorganised workers. He was elected to the all India working committee of the CITU. He was also elected to the West Bengal legislative assembly and served as an MLA for four terms. His death is a big loss to the movement of the beedi workers and unorganised workers in the country and to the trade union movement in general. CITU pays respectful homage and dips its red flag in memory of Comrade Nizamuddin. It offers its heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family members and all comrades in the state of West Bengal, said the statement.
