Potato Fields Turned Death-meadows for Bengal Farmers

THE insecticide was there in the house to prevent infection of aphids on mustard seeds. But Gudu Murmu had no intention whatever of spraying it on the mustard seeds. The marginal farmer from Bhatar poured it into his own throat.

The cost of the insecticide bought from a local fertiliser shop is still due to be paid. The onus is now on Ram Murmu to repay his father’s debt.

WEST BENGAL: State Conference Calls to Intensify Struggles

THE 24th state conference of the CPI(M) West Bengal  committee started with a massive rally at the  Brigade Parade Ground in Kolkata on March 8 and after five-days of deliberations concluded on March 13 with the battle cry to ‘Oust Trinamool, Save Bengal’. The conference, held in Promode Dasgupta Bhaban in Kolkata, witnessed threadbare discussions on political situation of the state, organisational aspects of the Party and a thorough review of the work of Left Front government in order to build up a Left alternative programme for the state.

Waves of Protest over Ranaghat Rape

WEST Bengal witnessed waves of protest condemning the brutal incident of rape of a 71-year-old nun in a Convent school in Ranaghat, Nadia. The chief minister herself faced the wrath of local people, including school students in Ranaghat when she visited the spot. Thousands of people blocked her car for more than an hour demanding immediate arrest of the culprits. Protestors raised slogans, “Chief Minister Go Back” and “We Want Justice”. An enraged chief minister, instead of pacifying the hurt people, threatened them and blamed the CPI(M) and the BJP for organising such protests.

People Determined as Brigade Clads Red

ELECTORAL reverses or ruling class terror, nothing can prevent Red flag in West Bengal from marching forward. Brigade Parade Ground, scene of many historic rallies in Kolkata, stood witness to this fact again on March 8 with a massive rally of the CPI(M).

This year’s Brigade rally marks the inauguration of the 24th West Bengal state conference of the Party. For the last few days, numerous streets and walls of this state carried the call of ‘Brigade Cholo’ with posters and flexes. People and the Party activists made preparations to make this year’s Brigade a historic one.

Preparing for Broader Struggles

PARTY conferences in West Bengal have focused on the emerging situation in the state and the necessity of translating the growing discontent among the people into concrete struggles. Nine district conferences have been completed till January 15, after the special meeting of the branches and local and zonal level conferences. The remaining districts will hold their conferences till last week of February and the state conference will begin with a public meeting at Brigade Parade Ground on March 8.

Massive rally in Kolkata Demands Mamata’s Interrogation

A RALLY organised by the Kolkata district Left Front, demanding the CBI interrogation of West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee in the Saradha Chit Fund probe, has witnessed huge gathering of people in Kolkata on December 2, 2014. This rally reflected the simmering anger among the people regarding the pace of the CBI investigation. While one after another evidence is coming out, exposing the complicity of top TMC leaders in the scam, the CBI and the ED have so far restrained themselves in circling round some aspects of the scam while avoiding the conspiracy angle.

Massive Protest in Rural Bengal Against Dilution of MGNREGA

MASSIVE protest action took place in rural West Bengal on November 26 against centre’s move to dilute MGNREGA , corruption in rural employment programme in the state and demanding remunerative prices for agricultural produces. Four Left peasant organisations called for stoppage of agricultural-related work and demonstrations while the CITU called upon the rural unorganised working people to join in the struggle.
