WEST BENGAL: Remembering Jyoti Basu

CPI(M) general secretary Sitaram Yechury called upon for united action to defend secular and democratic fabric of the country and to fight for a new and better India. Addressing a large gathering in Kolkata on July 9, to commemorate 102nd birth anniversary of Comrade Jyoti Basu, Yechury appealed to all sections of people in West Bengal to fight to restore the lost glory of Bengal.

The public meeting, organised by Jyoti Basu birth centenary committee, witnessed presence of eminent people from all walks of life, apart from Left leaders.

Brutal Police Lathicharge on Workers

TRADE Union workers were lathicharged by the state police in districts even when they were protesting against central government policies. There was a call for statewide law violation movement against the central government by all central trade unions and federations. Krishnanagar, Bolpur, Rampurhat, Durgapur witnessed massive lathicharge by the police on the peaceful demonstration of trade union workers. The police brutality was condemned by CITU state president Shyamal Chakraborty and state secretary Dipak Dasgupta. Nearing 50 thousand workers have been arrested.

Brutal Assault on Democracy in West Bengal

VIOLENCE and terrorisation of an unprecedented scale marked the municipal polls in West Bengal, tearing apart the semblance of rule of law. Hundreds of polling booths in Kolkata on April 18 and in 91 other municipalities on April 25 were captured by armed gangs of the Trinamool Congress, in a planned manner and with full help from the state administration. The mockery of democracy resulted in denying tens of thousands of people their voting rights.

The farce thus enacted has been proved by the results it had actually produced.

Intensifying Attacks, Widening Protests

ATTACK ON
STUDENTS
FOUR Left students’ organisations, including the Students’ Federation of India called for a rally and demonstration in Kolkata on April 2, on the second anniversary of martyrdom of Sudipta Gupta, who was killed in police custody. The rally was called with a demand of proper investigation of that incident, against rampant privatisation of higher education in the state, against corruption in teachers’ recruitment etc.

Yet another Battle for Democracy in West Bengal

YET another battle for defending democracy has started in West Bengal. In the ensuing elections to 91 municipalities and Kolkata Corporation, the ruling party has already launched a campaign of terror. As it has become a practice in West Bengal now in every election, the TMC initially targeted to capture as many municipalities as possible without contest. They have succeeded in Arambagh, Tarekeswar and Gayeshpur municipalities.
