West Bengal: First Phase Polling Marks People’s Resistance

THE sweltering heat and repeated attempts of disruption by TMC goons couldn’t resist the brave people of West Bengal from taking part in the Assembly polls in their fight to restore democracy in the state. Nearly 81 per cent of the 40 lakh electorate turned out to exercise their democratic right in the first phase of the Assembly polls on April 4.  In the first phase, polling took place in 18 constituencies - nine in Purulia, three in Bankura and six in West Medinipur district. All these constituencies were part of the Maoist-affected western districts of West Bengal.

Corruption in TMC Regime: People’s Poverty vs Rulers’ Prosperity

TRINAMOOL Congress came to power in West Bengal in 2011. In the last five years, the people of West Bengal have experienced complete denial of both public and private investment in welfare of the masses. Trinamool Congress, after coming to power, resorted to political intolerance towards the Left forces. This was happening in the immediate phase after gaining power. Political intolerance was followed by financial extortions from families of known Left voters as well as forced displacements of families of Left parties from their localities.

TMC Synonymous with Corruption, Scams

WEST BENGAL is witnessing protests in many parts of the state against the recent instance of corruption involving the TMC leaders. Dr Surjyakanta Mishra, CPI(M) state secretary and leader of the opposition said that this is how public money is being looted in Bengal. The Election Commission should initiate appropriate steps to ensure that this ill gotten money is not used in the coming elections. If required, president's rule may also be imposed to stop such rampant loot and misuse of that money.

Bengal Assembly Poll: Left Front Releases First List of Candidates

THE Left Front released its first list of candidates on March 7 for the ensuing assembly poll in West Bengal. The first list included 116 candidates; among them 16 are women and 25 candidates are coming from the religious minority communities. Sixty candidates are in the fray for the first time. Left Front chairman Biman Basu announced the names at a press conference. Bengal will witness six-phase polling on seven days from April 4 to May 5.

JNU Shadow in JU: United Resistance but Mamata Keeps Mum

JAWAHARLAL Nehru University (JNU) has experienced sounds of jackboots. People with democratic and secular values in the entire country joined hands in protest against the agenda of saffronisation. Kolkata and Bengal was no exception to that. Jadavpur University (JU), noted centre of excellence of the state, also became a venue of the protest. For that, the premier institution is also facing the wrath of the saffron brigade.
