THE Narendra Modi government has planned a ‘trishul’ attack against the constitution. The Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA), National Population Register and National Register of Citizens are the three points of this trishul. All three are interconnected and a single package. These cannot be separated, warned CPI(M) Polit Bureau member Prakash Karat while addressing a seminar organised by the Tamil Nadu Platform for People's Unity in Chennai on December 26.

THE Election Commission has countermanded the by-election to the RK Nagar assembly constituency in Tamil Nadu scheduled to be held on April 12, 2017. During the 2016 elections to the Tamil Nadu legislative assembly in 2016, elections to the constituencies of Aravakurichi and Thanjavur were countermanded for distribution of cash to voters. Those who have faith in parliamentary democracy must think about how to face this situation.

TAMIL NADU: CPI(M) to Conduct ‘Meet the People’ Campaign, Feb 20-25

FOLLOWING the death of Jayalalithaa, who was the general secretary of AIADMK and the chief minister of Tamil Nadu, AIADMK split into two factions, one under the leadership of Sasikala and the other of O Panneerselvam. These groups entered into a competition to capture power in both the party and the government. With Sasikala having gone to prison following the Supreme Court judgement in the Disproportionate Assets case, a ministry has been formed under the leadership of Edappadi Palanisamy belonging to the Sasikala faction.

CPI(M) Seeks Drought Relief

The entire South India has been facing massive droughts including Tamil Nadu. CPI(M) is holding a state wide protest in Tamil Nadu demanding higher compensation (Rs 10 lakhs) for families of those farmers who have died and is also demanding 200 days of employment guarantee under MNREGA. Road roko is being staged all over the state in which thousands of people have participated and have been arrested. G Ramakrishnan, CPI(M) Polit Bureau member and state secretary took part in the protest at Nagarcoil in Kanyakumari district.

THE people of Tamil Nadu have been facing a very severe agrarian crisis over the last several months. The entire state is in the grip of a drought, with the failure of both the south-west and the north-east monsoons. The refusal of the BJP government to implement the Supreme Court directive of September 30 to constitute the Cauvery Management Board has further complicated matters and the situation in the Kaveri delta districts of Thanjavur, Tiruvarur and Nagapattinam has turned grim. There has been a spate of farmers’ suicides in the state on an unprecedented scale.

Declare Tamil Nadu Drought Hit: TNKS and AIAWU Hold State-wide Struggle

A FARMER in Tamil Nadu's Thiruvarur district, sowed paddy hoping the Cauvery waters would irrigate his four-acre field. But the saplings he had planted began dying as the water released from the reservoir of Mettur Dam did not reach the tail end areas where his farm was located. Unable to repay a loan of Rs. 50,000, the farmer killed himself consuming pesticide, his family says. He was found dead near his field. His son said, "With no rain and no water, we are in debt too. My father was under stress seeing the fields. He then consumed pesticide."

Pinarayi Vijayan visits Jayalalithaa

THE chief minister of Kerala, Pinarayi Vijayan and governor, P Sathasivam, visited Apollo Hospitals, Chennai on October10 where Tamil Nadu chief minister Jayalalithaa is undergoing treatment.

Vijayan visited the hospital and held discussions with hospital managing director Prathap Reddy.

Pinarayi Vijayan said they had come to “convey the collective good wishes of the people of Kerala.” He was accompanied by CPI(M) Central Committee member T K Rangarajan, MP.

Hindutva Forces Run Riot in Coimbatore

THE last few days have seen a surge of violence in Coimbatore district and neighbouring areas in Tamil Nadu as the Hindu Munnani, (a part of the Sangh Parivar) let loose a reign of terror. The incidents began after the murder of their leader Sasikumar and the bandh called by the organisation. Many activists of the Munnani and associated organisations gathered outside the hospital and there was a planned and concerted outbreak of violence. There were quite a few incidents of arson in which shops and establishments owned by Muslims were targeted.

Shut the Liquor Shops: Widespread Struggle in Tamil Nadu

FOR the past one week, the people of Tamil Nadu raised their voice against TASMAC liqour shops, which have become a huge threat to the entire society. A shut down was observed, demonstrations and picketing were held, and people laid siege to liquor shops in many places. Left and democratic forces are leading the protest. The Tamil Nadu State Marketing Corporation (TASMAC), owned by the Government of Tamil Nadu, has monopoly over wholesale and retail vending of alcoholic beverages in the state. It controls the Indian Made Foreign Liquor (IMFL) trade in the state.

CITU Organises Massive Picketing in Tamilnadu

DEMANDING implementation of seven-point charter of demands, members from various unorganised sectors affiliated to the CITU staged a massive picketing across Tamilnadu on June 9. More than 50,000 workers were arrested.
Picketing the labour offices and central and state government offices in all districts, the agitators chanted slogans demanding the government to implement the minimum wages of Rs15,000 per month, pension of Rs 4,000 to tailors and to protect the workforce in a changing industrial scenario where many labour laws were being amended to benefit the employers.
