CPI(M)’s Initiative in Palliative Care in Kannur Dist

COINCIDING with the 66th anniversary of the death of legendary Communist P Krishna Pillai, on August 19, 2014, 1789 volunteers under the banner of the Initiative for Rehabilitation and Palliative Care (IRPC) visited households in Kannur district inhabited by people requiring palliative care.

 

It is estimated that in Kerala, around 0.3 to 0.4 percent of cancer patients require palliative care, which would mean that around 200 persons in every panchayat in the state, totaling to a whopping 1.25 lakh patients require palliative care.

 

‘Forging Broad Platform to Fight Anti-people Policies’

CPI(M) general secretary Prakash Karat said that CPI (M) is committed to form a broad platform to fight against the anti-people policies and communal designs of the Narendra Modi government. A massive convention organised in Punjab and the decision of the CPI(M), CPI and the CPI(ML) to jointly contest in Bihar assembly elections are part of this joint platform. This alliance will continue in Jharkhand assembly polls as well. He reiterated that elections are not the sole aim of this joint platform.

LDF Victory all over Kerala in Local body By-elections

THE Left Democratic Front has registered an emphatic victory in the by-elections held on August 12 for various local bodies. The LDF has wrested 18 seats out of 26. The UDF got only eight seats. The LDF’s victory spree spread in almost all districts from Thiruvananthapuram to Kannur. LDF candidates won by huge margin in most of the seats, while it lost two seats by single digit margin.

LDF Wins Local Body Bypolls

THE CPI(M) led Left and Democratic Front (LDF) has registered an enthusing victory in the byelections for various local bodies. Elections were held for 35 seats in different districts on May 22.
Out of these 35 seats, the LDF has won 18 seats; it wrested from the rival United Democratic Front (UDF) the latter’s 10 sitting seats. While the UDF was able to won only 13 seat, the BJP won just one. Political commentators in the state have described these results as indicative of a possible pro-LDF edge in the upcoming local body elections which are to be held in 2015.

Young Lady Found Dead in Police Custody

IN a shocking incident which exposes the brutality of police force in Kerala, a young lady was found dead in a police station in Changaramkulam in Malappuram district. Haneesha (23), an employee in a private hospital, was taken into custody by the police on April 23, in a theft case. It is suspected that she was hung to death in a rest room near the lock-up room. The body was found next morning.
The police claim was that Haneesha had committed suicide at 6.15 on April 22 morning. The body was then taken to a private hospital in Edappal.

Law and Order Collapses in Kerala

THE secretariat of the Kerala state committee of the CPI(M) in a statement issued on April 17 has said that the rule of law has collapsed in Kerala under the UDF rule and mafia dons have taken over the role of the police. Even people are not safe in their homes. In the 32 month long of UDF rule, over 13.58 lakh crimes have been registered in the state. Under the LDF rule, the state was ranked number one crime free state.  Under the UDF rule, political murders have become the order of the day in Kerala. Last week has seen a number of murders in different parts of the state.

THIS photograph was taken in Kochi on Sunday, April 6. In this image the prime minister of India is addressing a so-called "massive" UDF rally in the Rajiv Gandhi stadium at Thoppumpadi. This was the lone programme of Dr Manmohan Singh in Kerala and his first public meeting in South India. Dr Singh was here to appeal the gathering to vote for his cabinet colleague, Prof K V Thomas, the union food and civil supplies minister, who is a candidate in Eranakulam.
