CPI(M) Challenges Sangh Parivar in its Stronghold!

MANGALORE was painted red again, after being branded as saffron zone for over a decade. The occasion was Communal Harmony and Unity rally organised by CPI(M) on February 25.  It was held despite grave threats and violence by Sanghis.  The rally was a culmination of a campaign extending to several weeks, against communalisation of Coastal Karnataka and to restore communal harmony. Kerala chief minister and CPI(M) Polit Bureau member, Pinarayi Vijayan was scheduled to address the rally.

CITU’s Karnataka State Conference Calls for Strengthening Organisation

THE 13th Karnataka state conference of CITU was held successfully from October 17 to 19 at Kudalasangama in Bagalakote in the northern part of the state. Kudalasangama is a historical place where a movement for uplift of the downtrodden had began in the 12th century. In the 12th century, Basavanna was the finance minister under King Bijjala and he started the famous ‘vachana chaluvali’, along with ‘sharanas’, for the uplift of the downtrodden in society. Basavanna was a Brahmin by birth, but he dedicated his whole life for the cause of Dalit and other oppressed classes.

THE land acquisition process for Bangalore-Chennai Expressway project stands a testimony to the government’s neglect of the interests of the farmers and other stakeholders in the backdrop of globalisation and economic liberalisation policies. In three talukas of Kolar district and one taluka of Bengaluru Rural district in Karnataka, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) is rushing for acquiring lands in an authoritarian way.

KARNATAKA: Janashakthi Utsav Held in Bengaluru

A SEMINAR on the subject ‘Erosion of Rights of Linguistic States’ was held in Bengaluru on December 13. The Janashakthi, organ of the CPI(M) state committee, organised the seminar as part of ‘Janashakthi Utsav 2015’ where a special issue of the weekly, Rajyotsava, was also released. The website of the journal was also inaugurated. Theme of the special issue was ‘Karnataka 60: Dreams & Reality’. The seminar assumed significance in the background of the 60th anniversary of formation of states on linguistic basis.

Tarigami Addresses Rally in Vijayawada On Protection of Communal Harmony

ATTEMPTS are being made by the BJP, VHP, RSS and other Sangh Parivar forces to divide the people on the basis of religion, cautioned CPI(M) leader from Jammu and Kashmir, Mohammed Yousuf Tarigami. He was addressing a well-attended public meeting on ‘protection of communal harmony in our country’, organised by Aawaz in Vijayawada on December 6.

KARNATAKA: Protests Attack on Dalit

PROTESTS were held across Karnataka against the attack on a young dalit writer and journalism student Uchangi Prasad at Davangere in central Karnataka on October 22. Protests were held at Bangalore, Mangalore, Davangere, Tumakuru, Gajendragada and other places since the incident. Prominent writers, speakers were present at the protest meetings. Speaking at the Bangalore protest meeting, Prof K M Marulasiddappa said that “Drona's trying to cut fingers of 'Ekalavya’ in modern times” too.

KARNATAKA: Yechury Visits Injured Tribal

ON his way to release the Kannada Daily at Kasaragod on September 10, Sitaram Yechury, CPI(M) general secretary, visited Sundara Malekudiya who was admitted to a hospital in Mangaluru on September 3.

48 year old Sundara Malekudiya, a tribal residing at the hilly area of Neriya village of  Dakshina Kannada district, was assaulted by a landlord, Gopala Gowda with a weed-cutting machine on July 27. He had suffered serious injury on his left elbow and has lost two fingers in his right hand. Doctors said that it would take about a year for his hands to function.
