No More Polarisation: CPI(M)

The following is the statement issued by the Jammu and Kashmir state committee on January 17.

THE J&K state committee of the CPI(M) expresses its dismay over much-politicised debate regarding West Pakistan refugees’ issue and has urged the public and political leadership to resist the attempts of the vested interest to use the issue for regional and religious polarisation.

J&K: Tarigami Wins Kulgam Seat for Record 4th Term

AS we were going to the press last week, reports came in that Mohd Yusuf Tarigami, CPI(M) Central Committee member and secretary of the Jammu and Kashmir State Committee, had won the Kulgam Assembly seat for a fourth consecutive term by polling a total of 20,574 votes and defeating his nearest rival Nazir Ahmad Laway of PDP, who got 20,240 votes. In the 2008 elections, Tarigami had polled 17,175 votes and defeated Nazir Ahmad Laway by a margin of 237 votes. That means this time there is an increase in actual votes of CPI(M) by 3,399.

Jammu Kashmir Awami Mutahida Mahaz (AMM) Releases its Election Manifesto

JAMMU Kashmir Awami Mutahida Mahaz released its Election Manifesto on November 21 in Srinagar. The Manifesto titled “Towards a democratic alternative platform” asserts that the people of Jammu & Kashmir are facing various stressful problems which have their roots in the political uncertainty and the presence of harsh anti-people laws and acts. The political rights of the people have been extremely limited while the administration is bereft of transparency and responsiveness.

Road Project Workers Stage Protest

ON January 30, thousands of workers of the Chenani-Nashri Four Lane and Tunnel road project organised a militant protest demonstration at Jammu against the government’s inaction about and indifference towards their genuine and legitimate demands. The demonstration was organised by the Chenani-Nashri Four Lane and Tunnel Construction Workers Union, affiliated to the Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU), at Chenani.
