IT is now exactly five months since the mass protests in Sudan (started on December 19, 2018) had started that led to the deposition of the dictator Omar Al-Bashir. SUPER cyclone Fani formed in the Bay of Bengal stormed Odisha on May 3 as it hit the land near Puri town and damaged the 480 km long coast and the nearby areas of the state, from Ganjam to Balasore districts. The ravaging cyclone smashed Puri town, capital city Bhubaneswar, urban centres and villages, of 14 out of 30 districts of Odisha.

THE Polit Bureau of the CPI(M) expresses its grave concern at the damage to life, livestock and property being caused by cyclone Fani across the entire coastal belt of Odisha and parts of northern Andhra Pradesh. This severe cyclone is now moving towards West Bengal and is likely to cause further damage.

CYCLONE Fani was one of the severest cyclones to have wreaked havoc in Odisha. Thousands of thatched houses have been destroyed and reports of over fifty people having lost their lives are trickling in. There is extensive damage to power supply, communications and infrastructure.
