The Anti-Imperialist War

THE start of the Second World War in 1939 had a tremendous impact on the political developments in India. The British viceroy, without consulting any of the Indian representatives, declared India also a participant in the war. Following the declaration of war, prices of essential commodities shot up. People were discontented at the resulting rise in the cost of living. The Communist Party immediately came out with a declaration opposing the war.

AIAWU Slams Centre for Meagre Budget Allocations to Agrarian Sector

THE central working committee of the All India Agricultural Workers Union (AIAWU) said that the union budget 2020-21 is pro-corporate and anti-people. In a two-day meeting held in Delhi from February 19, the committee discussed various issues concerning the agrarian sector including methods to strengthen the public distribution system, efficient implementation of central flagship and other welfare schemes and passed resolution against the decision of the Supreme Court on reservations for SC/ST/OBCs in government jobs and promotions.

CORONAVIRUS OR COVID-19: China Supercharged Conventional Epidemic Control With Modern Science and Technology

THE novel coronavirus or COVID-19 epidemic appears to be under control in China, but could create new epicentres in South Korea, Italy and Iran. If this happens and creates multiple countries acting as new centres of the epidemic, we could be moving towards a pandemic. South Korea saw 214 new infections on February 24, though reports indicate a sharp drop in new infections. Northern Italy is now under lockdown, and has emerged as another centre of the epidemic, with people returning from Italy spreading the infections to other countries.

The Uses of “Populism”

CLASS struggle occurs in the realm of concepts too. The World Bank for instance systematically counters Left concepts by employing a novel tactic: it uses the very same concepts as are used by the Left, but gives them a wholly different meaning; as a result they either come to mean something entirely different from what the Left had originally meant by them, or, at the very least, they become fuzzy and hence useless to the Left. In either case the power of the Left concept is neutralised.

Trump in India

THE visit of United States president, Donald Trump, to India was like none other by an American president in recent times.  Though a State visit, the highlight was the “Namaste Trump” event at the Motera Stadium in Ahmedabad, where Narendra Modi enacted an Indian version of ‘Howdy Modi’ in Houston last year.  However it would not be correct to dismiss this show as just ‘optics’, or, a tamasha.

DELHI: Left Parties Appeal on Current Prevailing Situation

AN urgent meeting of the Left parties of Delhi state was held on February 25, to take note of violence and rioting in North-East Delhi yesterday. It took a serious objection to the fact that BJP leader Kapil Mishra on February 23 at Babarpur threatened the anti-CAA, NRC, NPR protesters as an extra judicial authority in the presence of a senior police officer. In fact, he should be held responsible for the rioting. He should be arrested immediately, and also be booked under stringent acts.
