SFI: BJP-led NDA Govt’s War on Students Continues

The union budget is a continuation of the BJP-led NDA government’s war on the students of the country.

The share of expenditure on education as a percentage of the total central budget is just 3.6 percent, which is 0.2 percent less than the revised estimates for the year 2015-16. The same figure in terms of the percentage of the total GDP, is a meagre 0.5 percent.

Allocations for school education have been cut from Rs 69,794 crores in 2015-16 to Rs 63,826 crores.

New Challenges Before Student Movement

THE student movement is going through very crucial times in India. It, at present, looks a little ineffective and less sharp as compared to student movements of other countries where they have achieved many important victories. In fact, Indian society has witnessed rapid changes in the past few decades. In the era of neo-liberal economic policies, social values have changed and the social structure is changing. Impact of the capitalist and open market values are deepening in our society. Being an integral part of the society, students are also deeply affected by these changes.

TN: Modi Govt Betrayed the Youth

THE state and central governments have betrayed the youth and shattered their expectations, said M B Rajesh, all India president of the Democratic Youth Federation of India.

Addressing the 15th state conference of DYFI Tamil Nadu at Dindigul on January 3, he said that 43,000 government jobs were abolished across the country in the last three months. Over 11 lakh government posts have been lying vacant for the last one year, and IT-related jobs have been cut by five percent. The BJP-led government at the centre did not make any efforts to fill existing vacancies.

SFI Condemns RSS Attack on its Leader in Rajasthan

THE Central Executive Committee of the Students’ Federation of India, in a statement issued on January 2, 2016 has strongly condemned the attack on Ramkrishna Chhimpa, district president of the SFI in Churu, Rajasthan by the RSS goons in the midnight on January 3. Around 50 hooligans belonging to the saffron brigade entered into the Kisan Mazdoor Bhavan at Sardar Shahar where Ramkrishna Chhimpa was sleeping and brutally beat him for being actively involved in the SFI activities.

They all were youth, nearly 25,000. They gathered in the city of Dindigul. It was a huge rally of Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI) as a grand starting of the 15th state conference of the organisation's Tamil Nadu unit, on the last evening of 2015.
The leader was N Sankaraiah, veteran leader of CPI(M), of the Indian Communist movement and a freedom fighter.

DYFI Yuva Sangharsh Jathas: March Towards A Casteless Secular Maharashtra

TWO esteemed scholar-activists of Maharashtra, Dr Narendra Dabholkar and Comrade Govind Pansare were shot dead in the last two years in almost identical circumstances. It is widely known that extremist Hindutva outfits like Sanathan Sanstha are behind these killings. Very recently another outspoken scholar M M Kalburgi was also shot dead at his home in Karnataka in similar circumstances.

MAHARASHTRA: DYFI Holds Tenth State Conference

THE 10th Maharashtra state conference of the DYFI held in Aurangabad City – the centre of the Marathwada region –  on October 9-11, 2015, resolved to rapidly expand the youth movement and organisation to meet the challenges posed by the murderous rightwing offensive. In connection with the conference, a massive youth rally and public meeting were organised on October 9 evening. Hundreds of DYFI activists from Aurangabad and nearby districts participated in the colourful rally.

Resist the Move to Scrap Non-Net fellowships

THE central executive committee of the Students’ Federation of India in a statement issued on October 20, has strongly condemned the latest move of the University Grants Commission (UGC) to scrap non-NET fellowships for the researchers. SFI has urged its units across the nation to be vigilant and be ready to resist any such anti-student moves. Such a move is coming at a juncture when the researchers from all the streams are demanding for an enhancement in non-NET fellowship so that they could pursue their academic endeavour and do quality research.

JAMMU & KASHMIR: Hunger Strike by National Youth Corps

THE site of protest at the Pratap Park in Srinagar resembled a makeshift hospital with hundreds of youth lying under the tent with bottles of saline and glucose dangling above them. Over 200 members of the Jammu and Kashmir National Youth Corps Association have been living in the tents for the last 21 days like refugees in their own land. They are in the midst of a united struggle to secure their right to livelihood.

SFI Condemns Brutal Police Lathicharge on HP Students

THE Central Executive Committee of the Students’ Federation of India in a statement issued on March 18, 2015 has condemned the brutal lathicharge on the students’ march to Himachal Pradesh Vidhan Sabha in Shimla on March 18, injuring a large number of students including girl students. State secretary Suresh Sarwal and president Puneet Dhamta were also injured in the lathicharge.
