Celebrating Champaran 1917

AT a moment when the ideals and events of our national movement seem to be fading from public memory, it is gratifying, indeed, that there should be celebrations in this country of the centenary of one of the most remarkable episodes of modern Indian history, the Champaran Satyagraha of 1917.

TELANGANA ARMED STRUGGLE HEROINE: Chakali Ilamma Statue Unveiled

THE unfinished agenda of the heroic Telangana armed struggle -- land reforms -- must be taken up with new vigor, said CPI(M) Polit Bureau member Brinda Karat in Palakurti town of Warangal district  in Telangana on September 10. She was addressing a public meeting after the unveiling of a statue of Chakali Ilamma, the heroic Telangana armed struggle fighter. The statue was unveiled by veteran CPI(M) leader and armed struggle fighter Mallu Swarajyam in the presence of state secretaries of CPI(M), CPI, RSP, MCPI and Forward Bloc parties.

 

Compilation of Babari Masjid Documents

SPEAKING at a function to release the book Destruction of the Babari Masjid: A National Dishonour, eminent historian Professor Romila Thapar said that the present book, which is third in the series on the issue, has shed further light on this shameful incident and the divisive politics surrounding it. The preceding two volumes of the series have also been penned by A G Noorani. She said that, together, the three volumes comprehensively document almost all aspects pertaining to the destruction of the Babari Masjid. 

 

Comrade Jyoti Basu: The Last of the Navaratnas

JULY 8, 2014 marks the culmination of the birth centenary year of Comrade Jyoti Basu, one of the most outstanding leaders of the Left movement in India, the longest-serving chief minister in the country who led West Bengal for nearly a quarter century, and the last of the CPI(M) Navaratnas. These Navaratnas – and innumerable other veteran Communist leaders of that generation – made immense contributions and untold sacrifices during extremely difficult times for the building of the CPI(M) and the Left movement in India.

We are reproducing below a slightly edited article by Comrade M Basavapunnaiah that appeared in a special issue of People’s Democracy commemorating the birth centenary of V I Lenin (April 22, 1970). This is being done both as a tribute to Comrade MB’s understanding of the Leninst tactics and for the importance of these being based on concrete analysis of concrete conditions. Secondly, this article is being reprinted on the occasion of Lenin’s 144th birth anniversary that falls on April 22, 2014.
