Peace March at Agartala

Rahul Sinha

Thousands of people marched through the streets of Agartala on August 28 as the Left Front organised a mammoth peace rally in the city to spread the message of peace and unity.
The Left Front had organised this peace march in the backdrop of the hooliganism that occurred from the IPFT held rally on August 23 and the subsequent violence in the city by goons and the evil attempt to disturb the atmosphere of peace,  harmony, unity in the state by spreading rumours and creating ethnic tension.

The peace march started from Swami Vivekananda Stadium and walked through the busy streets of the city to culminate in front of Rabindra Shatavarshiki Bhaban. Thousands of people from both tribal and non-tribal communities participating in the peace march chanted slogans in Bengali and Kokborok reaffirming the resolve to maintain and strengthen the bond of unity, peace and harmony as is the age-old tradition of the state. Apart from students, youth and women, people belonging to different professions like engineers,  doctors, lawyers, writers, artistes too participated in the rally in significant numbers. The rally carrying banners and flags of the constituent parties of the Left Front attracted the attention of the traders and pedestrians who welcomed the initiative and were seen taking photographs of the procession enthusiastically. The peace march was led by CPI(M) Central Committee member Gautam Das, state secretariat members Manik Dey and Narayan Kar, CPI state secretary Ranjit Majumdar, AIFB leader Brajagopal Ray, RSP state secretary Sudarshan Bhattacharya and others.

Before the march began, at a meeting of short duration at Swami Vivekananda Stadium, Gautam Das said a nefarious design was at work to weaken the unity and harmony between the tribal and non-tribal masses. The peace loving citizens of Agartala have prevented any escalation of untoward incidents following the event of August 23. Their firm attitude has foiled the evil designs of the divisive forces. But there is no room for complacency.  We must be cautious and resist these forces and strengthen people's unity. IPFT had assured that their rally will be peaceful but had planned in advance to create ethnic tension and a riot. When the initial attempt to create disturbances in the city failed, sustained campaign of hatred and falsehood in the social media were carried out spreading rumours of death in clashes and posting pictures of children and people killed in Pakistan and South Korea. The Left Front government is trying to take the state forward from the disadvantageous position it was put into due to partition. The reactionary forces are unable to digest this development of the state. They are trying to mount violent attacks on the government out of their desperation and frustration. These must be countered by the united force of the people.
