LDF Wins Mayoral Post in 5 of 6 Corporations

THE CPI(M)-led Left Democratic Front (LDF) has won elections to the mayoral post in five of the six corporations in Kerala. Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Kozhikode, Thrissur and Kannur are the corporations where LDF has won, while Congress won the mayoral post in Kochi Corporation. All five mayors of LDF are from CPI(M). LDF won the chairperson's post in 43 of 86 municipalities in the state. UDF won in 38 municipalities, and BJP and the Development Front bagged one each. Group feud in Congress became evident during mayoral elections. In a surprising move, Congress rebel P K Ragesh supported LDF's mayoral candidate E P Latha in Kannur Corporation, leading to her election. In the 55-member Kannur Corporation, LDF and UDF won 27 seats each, besides Congress rebel Ragesh. Despite the Congress leadership's attempt to woo the rebel, he extended unconditional support to LDF. Here the deputy mayor's post was won by UDF candidate in toss. Young advocate and DYFI leader V K Prashant emerged victorious in Thiruvananthapuram Corporation, where the LDF nominee got 42 votes as against BJP candidate's 34. In Kollam, V Rajendrababu of CPI(M) was elected mayor with a thumping majority. In Thissur, Ajitha Jayaraj of CPI(M) emerged victorious with 26 votes. In Kozhikode, former MLA V K C Mammad Koya was elected as mayor. In Kochi, Congress candidate Soumini Jain won with 41 votes against her CPI(M) opponent who got 30 votes. Two BJP members and one Independent abstained from voting in Kochi Corporation. In Thiruvananthapuram and Kollam, CPI(M) candidates won in all the municipalities. There are four each municipalities in both districts. In Pathanamthitta, both fronts shared two each. In Alappuzha and Kottayam, LDF won two and UDF won four. In Idukki, UDF won both the two municipalities. In Eranakulam district, LDF won four and UDF won six. In Thrissur, LDF won seven out of eight. In Iringalakkuda Municipality, the Party lost as one councillor's vote became invalid. BJP has won Palakkad Municipality. UDF won four and LDF won two in Palakkad district. In Malappuram, Kondotty Municipality was won by Vikasanamunnani led by LDF along with other three. UDF won eight. In Kozhikode district, LDF won four and UDF won three. In Wayanad, Sulthan Batheri was won by LDF as the Kerala Congress member took a stand against UDF. Kalpetta Municipality chairman's election was postponed due to factional fued in Congress. In Kannur, LDF won five and UDF won three. In Kasaragode, LDF won two and UDF won one.
