Muzaffar Ahmad Birth Anniversary

From Our Special Correspondent in Kolkata

CPI(M) leaders called upon Party workers to strengthen movements to change the existing political situation. Addressing the public meeting on Muzaffar Ahmad birth anniversary, CPI(M) Polit Bureau members Suryakanta Misra, Biman Basu and Md Salim emphasised the importance of ideology and organisation in the fight to advance. The main programme was held in Promode Dasgupta Bhaban in Kolkata. Tributes were paid to Muzaffar Ahmad in numerous programmes in all districts. Birth anniversary of Muzaffar Ahmad is historically important for CPI(M) as it signified a sharp ideological battle in the Communist movement. Recollecting the backdrop, Biman Basu said, the forerunners like Muzaffar Ahmad went through extreme hardship to develop mass support for the Party. Ahmad refused to be cowed down in any situation, however adverse it might be. Misra said, Marxism is the philosophy of practice. We have to apply Marxism to the concrete conditions of today to change the unfavourable situation. The change does not occur automatically. Only struggles can bring desirable changes. Communists have to depend on ideology and strengthen organisation to move towards pro-people changes in the society. He said, the political force which has ascended to power at the centre is the result of the alliance between corporate and communal elements. This is a dangerous force. Resentment and discontent against Modi government has already begun, though it has only been a year now. On the other hand, all spheres of democracy have come under attack in West Bengal. CPI(M) and the Left parties will develop bigger and wider movements on peoples’ issues in the near future to change this intolerable situation. Speaking on the occasion, Md Salim said, perceptible rightward shift is being witnessed in the country. It has engulfed not only politics, but the cultural spheres too. Left has the historic duty to challenge this degeneration. In West Bengal, it is extremely important to fight against all kinds of communal forces, he said.
