M B Centenary Meeting in Kolkata

A BARBARIC ruling party like the Trinamool Congress is helping in the growth of another barbaric party BJP in West Bengal, CPI (M) general secretary Prakash Karat has said in Kolkata. The TMC regime, based on corruption and lumpen domination, has helped RSS and its outfits to sow the seeds of communal politics in the state. Karat addressed a public meeting in Kolkata to commemorate the birth centenary of Comrade M Basavpunnaiah on September 6. Analysing the present situation, Karat said a communal party has gained majority in Parliament for the first time with help from the corporates and RSS. The ultimate aim of RSS is to establish a Hindu Rashtra in India. They are out to destroy the secular fabric of the country and impose their communal ideology on the people. RSS has chosen a person as BJP president who has been charge-sheeted in false encounter cases. Amit Shah, after gaining dazzling success in Uttar Pradesh, has now prioritised some states for expansion of BJP. They will try every trick to expand in West Bengal, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Telengana and Andhra Pradesh. Karat said TMC and its government in West Bengal have been exposed. Nexus between unscrupulous businessmen and deceitful politicians has established the regime of lumpen capitalism. The specter of Saradha scam now haunts this government. TMC is destroying democratic structure in a fascistic way. Communal and divisive forces are finding fertile ground in this situation. In recent period, RSS has gained strength in West Bengal. BJP’s vote share has increased considerably. Muslim fundamentalist organisations have also become more active. TMC had relations with BJP in the past. These parties are actually complementing each other. Karat recalled that Bengal suffered tremendous impact of communalism before and after Independence. Partition was a tragic result of that. But because of the strong fight of the Lefts in Bengal, communalism had to retreat. For decades, communal forces remained visually non-existent in Bengal. Karat cautioned that the danger of resurgence of communalism has become a real threat now. There is no scope of complacency now to fight this evil force. The fight against communalism is not merely a political one; it must be a multi-layered struggle. Karat said communal forces have become more dreadful after the corporates have extended their support to them. Big capital wants to divide people on communal lines to thwart attempts of resistance to neo-liberal policies. This is where the Lefts have to take up the challenge. The Modi Government has already exposed its policy direction by allowing FDI in defence and railways, along with extension of ceiling in insurance. Karat, recalling Marx, said that railway was the harbinger of capitalism in India. This sector also has been opened up for foreign capital. Karat said the Lefts in India have to fight against both neo-liberal onslaught and communal offence. CPI (M) is trying to mobilise all Left parties, forces and individuals for united movement. Despite differences, three things count here: fight against imperialism, neo-liberalism and communalism. Karat expressed hope that the response of such a unity effort would be good. CPI (M) Polit Bureau member Biman Basu presided over the meeting. Basu recalled Comrade Basavpunnaiah’s contribution to the Communist movement in India. He said Comrade MB had to engage in ideological debate with CPSU and CPC and outlined the path of Indian revolution.
