Central TUs to Hold Joint National Convention on Sept 15

THE eleven central trade unions and the national federations of industrial workers and employees that have been spearheading the joint trade union campaign since 2009 have decided to continue the struggle on the common demands of the workers in the country. In a series of meetings after the present BJP government came to power at the centre, the central trade unions expressed serious concerns at the unilateral decision of the government to amend labour laws which would have serious adverse impact on the working conditions of the workers and their basic trade union rights. They also expressed their anger at the total apathy of the government to implement the consensus recommendations of the 43rd, 44th and 45th sessions of the Indian Labour Conference on minimum wages, same wage and benefits as regular workers for the contract workers doing the same job and granting the status of workers with all the attendant benefits to the scheme workers. The central trade unions strongly denounced the retrograde moves of the government in increasing the FDI in the defence and insurance and allowing it in railways as well as its aggressive moves for disinvestment in public sector undertakings which are detrimental to the national interests. Noting that the BJP government was continuing the same anti worker, anti national policies as the Congress led UPA government, the central trade unions have called for a joint national convention to decide the future course of campaigns and struggles against these policies and to protect the interests of the workers and the people in general. The joint convention will be held at the Constitution Club in New Delhi on September 15, 2014. Thousands of workers from all over the country, belonging to the organised and unorganised sectors, insurance, banks, telecom, railways, state and central government employees and other sections representing all sections of workers in the country will participate in the convention. The convention will adopt a charter of demands and give a call for massive mobilisations of workers through joint conventions and protest demonstrations all over the country.
