West Bengal Left Front will Observe 72 hours Sit-in Demonstration

From our special correspondent

THE Left Front will hold sit-in demonstrations from June 25-27 protesting the terror against the Left Front activists unleashed by the goons backed by the ruling party and attack on democratic rights as well as the livelihood of the common people of the state. The programme will highlight unprecedented attacks on democratic and constitutional rights of the people in the state. A Left Front delegation met chief minister Mamata Banerjee on June 9 and demanded immediate halt to the political violence in the state. They appraised the chief minister in detail the incidents of murder, destruction of houses, false cases and other forms of terror. But, nothing meaningful has been initiated by the state administration since then. Left Front chairman Biman Basu said that the nature of the terror unleashed is unprecedented and severe. Even the minors are not being spared by the TMC hooligans. The murderers of the Left activists are not being arrested. On the contrary, several Left activists are being charged with false and fabricated cases. The supporters of the Left Front are not being allowed to cultivate in their lands. The aim of such terrorisation is to cripple mass movements and democratic rights; and ultimately to abolish democratic space, maintained Biman Basu. The ugly nature of administration and its complete surrender to the ruling party has been once again exposed through an incident in Raidighi in South 24 Parganas. Four persons were killed in Raidighi in an internal feud of the TMC. Instead of apprehending the culprits, police acted at the behest of the TMC and named CPI(M) leaders in the FIR. Bimal Bhandari, CPI(M) zonal secretary was arrested and CPI(M) state committee member and former minister Kanti Ganguly was falsely implicated in the FIR. Even before any police investigation started, ruling party castigated CPI(M) leaders as ‘murderers’ in the state assembly in a formal resolution. Entire locality is witness to what really happened. The internal clashes of the TMC have turned violent in many areas of the state, resulting in murders and open clashes. The Left Front has strongly condemned the police atrocity in Raidighi and demanded immediate release of those who were falsely implicated. The CPI(M) has warned that a statewide militant protest will be organised if Kanti Ganguly is arrested. The Left Front has said that the state government was doing nothing to control the sky rocketing price rise. Setting up any new factory or industry seems to be a day-dream in West Bengal where the running factories are being shut down. The employability is shrinking day by day. The farmers are being deprived of equitable price and they are not getting proper support price, said Biman Basu. He further said people of all terror-driven areas will take part in the sit-in demonstration programme and they will share their experience with their comrades and common people. Families of the martyrs will be present there. The Left Front leaders will address the gathering and the district leaders will narrate the nature of terror in their respective districts. The sit-in demonstration will start from June 25 to recollect the black days of internal emergency which was declared on that very date in 1975. The attack unleashed on democratic rights during emergency is worth remembering in the TMC regime where onslaught on all democratic spheres has become a practice.
